It's no secret: soaking up nature in all kinds of weather is an essential part of being happy and healthy. Despite knowing the benefits, for many people spending time outdoors every day just is not high on their priority list.
Here are three reasons why you should make going outside every day a daily habit:
1. Relieve Stress
We can all think of a time in our life where we felt the effects of stress. Not only does stress feel horrible on a visceral level, but it is also associated with conditions such as depression, obesity, and high blood pressure. It can wreak havoc on your health AND your healthy mindset.
Studies have shown that being outside for as little as 20-30 mins a day can significantly reduce the stress hormone cortisol by approximately 20%. TWENTY PERCENT!
2. Strengthen Immunity
In the same way that a muscle needs to be challenged in order for it to stay strong, a healthy immune system needs to be challenged regularly to stay healthy. That simply doesn’t happen when we spend all of our time in the same environment indoors.
Time outside has shown to increase the number of white blood cells in the body, an effect that can last for several days afterward! White blood cells are crucial to your immune system because they help your body battle germs.
3. Weight Management
Exercise and proper diet are the two most effective ways to manage your weight.
Guess what: if you spend 30 mins walking outside a day, you’ll almost always hit your recommended 10,000 step minimum! Those same steps will burn a whole bunch more calories if you go snowshoeing in the winter
My Challenge for You:
I challenge you to give yourself one full day off from the news and social media. Use that time and go outside. Dress for the weather (yes, even if it's raining, wear a raincoat). Start with just ten minutes walking around the block. Invite your friends for a social distance stroll through the park. It can be as simple as sitting outside in your backyard with a cool drink.
